Traditional Counseling
Looking for counseling in a relaxed environment?
At Painted Horses LLC, counseling is intentionally comfortable and conversational. While talking with your counselor, you may look out the window and see a horse in the pasture, be greeted at the door by one of our dogs or a barn cat, or simply settle into a space that doesn’t feel much like a traditional clinical office. Our counseling style is collaborative and conversational. Although the work is purposeful, counseling doesn’t always have to feel like counseling. Conversation, humor, experiences, observations, and metaphors may all become part of the process. Sometimes growth happens naturally in the midst of a conversation or experience, as you begin to notice something differently, make a connection, or discover another way of looking at something. In the first few sessions, we work together to explore your concerns, identify what you would like to be different, and develop goals that are meaningful to you. Because no two people are alike, therapeutic approaches are adapted to the individual rather than expecting the individual to fit a particular approach. Our approach draws from a variety of therapeutic interventions, which may include experiential, cognitive-behavioral, somatic, structural, and other approaches. Whenever possible, we incorporate experiential work into counseling. Experiences that occur naturally—in conversation, through an activity, in the environment, or in an interaction with an animal—can become opportunities for reflection and discovery. Metaphors that emerge from these experiences can provide another way of understanding what is happening in your life and may continue to be useful long after the counseling session has ended.Words are powerful. We pay attention to the words we use and the ways we describe ourselves, our experiences, and the world around us. Sometimes a small change in language can open the door to seeing something differently. How we say things can change things.Life brings all of us experiences that can challenge us, overwhelm us, or leave us unsure of what comes next. It also brings experiences that invite us to grow. Counseling offers a place to talk openly about what is happening, experience the emotions that come with it, and become curious about what those emotions, thoughts, and experiences may be telling us.The goal isn’t necessarily to make difficult emotions, feelings, or experiences disappear. It is learning to understand and cope with them, move through them, and discover what might be possible moving forward. Growth can happen through conversation, through experiencing and expressing emotion, through seeing something from another perspective, or sometimes simply through finding different words for something we’ve been holding for a long time.
